Sự phản đối càng tăng lên khi Kei Komuro trở về Nhật Bản để chuẩn bị cho đám cưới với kiểu tóc đuôi ngựa (ponytail) hôm 27/9, sau ba năm du học ở Mỹ. Hình ảnh anh buộc tóc, tay kéo vali khi đáp chuyến bay xuống sân bay Narita, tỉnh Chiba lập tức gây sốt.
Theo Japan Times, cụm từ “tóc đuôi ngựa của Kei Komuro” xuất hiện dày đặc trên khắp trang báo và mạng xã hội. Số đông người dân Nhật cho rằng kiểu tóc này thiếu đạo mạo, không phù hợp với hình ảnh chú rể hoàng gia tương lai. Họ viết: “Không xứng đáng với công chúa”. Trong khi đó, nhiều người ở các quốc gia khác bày tỏ ủng hộ diện mạo của chàng trai 30 tuổi và cho rằng người Nhật không công bằng với anh khi phán xét qua bề ngoài.
Guardian lý giải kiểu tóc được xem là bình thường ở các nước phương Tây, nhưng ở Nhật Bản, người dân cho rằng tóc đuôi ngựa không đáp ứng những tiêu chuẩn xã hội. Bà Hitomi Tonomura – giáo sư tại Đại học Michigan – nói với CNN: “Nếu anh ấy là nghệ sĩ, mái tóc đuôi ngựa hoàn toàn bình thường. Nhưng với văn hóa truyền thống Nhật Bản, mọi người cho rằng nó không phù hợp với một luật sư và đặc biệt là vị hôn phu của công chúa”.
Trước khi tới diện kiến bố vợ tương lai – Thái tử Fumihito – ở cung Akasaka hôm 18/10 để bàn chuyện hôn lễ, Komuro đã cắt tóc gọn gàng, làm xét nghiệm Covid-19 và đo thân nhiệt ngay trong xe. Nhưng mái tóc vẫn ám ảnh người dân. Họ cho rằng kiểu tóc là dấu hiệu các thành viên hoàng gia không còn sẵn sàng tuân theo những luật lệ trong quá khứ, báo hiệu những phá cách không phù hợp với truyền thống. Hôm 27/10, tờ President đưa tin sau đám cưới, hoàng gia Nhật vẫn tiếp tục hứng chịu sự chỉ trích của một số người dân. Hôn lễ được xem là không đủ sức thuyết phục tất cả.
Đám cưới công chúa Mako và Komuro trải qua nhiều trở ngại, từng bị hoãn nhiều lần do mẹ của Komuro vướng bê bối tài chính. Người dân cho rằng Komuro là “kẻ đào mỏ” khi đính hôn với công chúa. Cuộc biểu tình phản đối lễ cưới diễn ra chiều 10/10 tại Ginza, khu vực đông dân nhất Tokyo và thu hút hơn 100 người, phần lớn là phụ nữ. Áp lực dư luận khiến Mako bị chẩn đoán mắc chứng rối loạn căng thẳng. Trước đám cưới một tuần, cô bật khóc khi được gặp chồng sắp cưới sau ba năm xa cách.
Ngoài việc mất địa vị hoàng gia vì kết hôn với thường dân, Mako trở thành nữ thành viên hoàng gia Nhật đầu tiên từ chối nhận khoản hồi môn 1,3 triệu USD theo truyền thống kể từ sau Thế chiến hai.
Không được lòng người dân, nhưng mối tình của họ nhận được sự ủng hộ của bố mẹ Mako. Theo Asahi, khi cả hai hẹn hò từ năm 2012 tại quận Minato Mirai ở Yokohama, hay thành phố Kamakura tỉnh Kanagawa, các vệ sĩ từ Đội cận vệ hoàng gia thường hộ tống Mako mỗi khi công chúa ra ngoài. Theo yêu cầu từ Thái tử Akishino và Thái tử phi Kiko, các vệ sĩ hòa vào đám đông, giữ khoảng cách với đôi uyên ương để họ được tự nhiên.
Kei Komuro sinh năm 1991, sống ở Yokohama cùng mẹ và ông nội.
